When I locked down my angst-filled LJ and made this my new public blog, I decided that I wouldn't say much about my own life. I might talk about new music I listened to, restaurants I visited, or crosswords I hated, but there wouldn't be stuff pertaining to the developments of my own life.

I think you'll agree that I have to make an exception here. See you after the jump.

Why didn't I know about Kuma's sooner? I feel so deprived.

Good beer, great burgers, and a gritty atmosphere. I had the Metallica and I'm tempted to have another tonight (though I won't). If you're anywhere close, check it out.

I guess I'll throw in a puzzle-related tidbit. In yesterday's USA Today Quick Cross (the 4x4 crossword), two clues were "Vital part of baseball?" You get one guess at the answers. Hint: They crossed at the first letter. Another hint: Don't overthink it.

Yes, I'm afraid so: BASE and BALL.

So after the recent earthquake, I had an existential crisis concerning my own mortality and purpose on this planet. I lived an ascetic lifestyle for a little over a week, becoming one with my thoughts and my surroundings and achieving inner peace.

Either that or I just haven't had much to say.

I should mention that this past Sunday's LA Times crossword was mine. You can solve it online, or you can get an account on cruciverb.com and get the Across Lite version. It's a pretty simple theme and not a particularly hard puzzle, so have fun with it.

What else? Went to the Joe Jackson show here in Chicago on Wednesday. Really good stuff; the man still has it. Wish I could have justified the purchase to a ticket to the next night's show in the same locale; he said at the end that he would be doing a different set.

My sports focus is largely on Chelsea FC right now. A magnificent performance against United has us tied for the Premiership lead, although we still need our foes to drop points due to an insurmountable goal difference. Tomorrow, the Blues will attempt to secure a rematch against ManUre by taking care of the Scousers in the Champions League semifinal at Stamford Bridge tomorrow. With the away goal scored, a clean sheet will be sufficient to propel Chelsea to Moscow, although the purely defensive style of play has not served them well.

The Braves are finishing off their traditional .500-ish April. They struggled at first, then won five straight, and now are scuffling again. Injuries have been a major concern and the offense has been enigmatic. I remain confident that a successful summer is ahead.

Blogging is hard.

Um.

So I awoke at about 4:30 to my bed rocking back and forth, and not for the right reasons (hey-o!). In my barely-conscious state, I actually suspected the couple downstairs, but wondered a) why this would be happening in the wee hours of the morning and b) why this has never happened before.

Went back to sleep, got up some time later, got on the computer, and read a friend's status about being roused by an earthquake. I took another look at which friend it was. She's in Chicago.

Wait...what?

Google News confirmed it: Illinois got quaked today, and it was clearly sensed in Chicago. My first earthquake. I'm a little mad I wasn't fully awake to appreciate it.

Nope, not me. Congratulations to Thomas Snyder, who just repeated as World Sudoku Champion in Goa, India!

Lest any crossword fans look down on sudoku as an inferior intellectual activity, this guy has a new book of a very interesting sudoku/Battleship hybrid (I hope to track it down myself soon), and he recently earned a PhD in chemistry. Whew.

Way to Goa, Thomas!
